PSA was established by the state pharmaceutical societies in 1977, some of which had been in existence for more than 100 years. Non-compulsory membership consists of some 10,000 practicing pharmacists - the largest peak body of community pharmacists in Australia.

The PSA provides the pharmacy profession with a national identity to effect and regulate affairs, in consultation and liaison with the Australian Government, other professions and industry.

The PSA has access to the best resources available to provide professionally sourced and objectively written content that is the most credible and most accurate in pharmacy.

The society regularly publishes a range of media for communication of essential information directly with pharmacists and pharmacy staff (ie. pharmacy technicians, pharmacy assistants) providing comprehensive coverage of the pharmacy market.
